![]() I also noticed that the Vari Comp by Native Instruments is something I already owned (and forgot about) so I'll try that tomorrow.Ĭlick to expand.I am so glad you mention this plug in. I purchased the Black Rooster bundle, so I'll have more 1176's, and I'll try the Plugin Alliance Purple Audio MC77 again, to see if I can't arise to making more mature judgements. Although it's limiting rather than compressing, it has a very analog, very organic effect on something unwieldy dynamically like a piano. Its called Frontier - I'm not sure what kind of limiter circuitry its emulating - being "self-adaptive" I guess it spans a range of styles. There's also a free thing by D16 which is actually a limiter - you have to set the levels before you play loud or you're bound to blow your speakers, because the low-to-high range is like from pin drop quiet to explosive. For live instrumentation though the latency should be lower, and although the IK one is probably one of their best plugins, I have just begun to really get my feet wet.Īs for VariMu, which I love on piano, I've fallen in love with DDMF Magic Death Eye Stereo. ![]() Tim P's, At $25, if I already owned the Nebula 4 I would definitely check it out. Tim Petherick Acustica Nebula 4-based U76 V3 is a compressor I haven't tried that would be my instinct - or the UAD - that's if I had the money and didn't care about latency so much. The "advanced" "mixing engineer" compressor lingo has just started seeping in you could say, so now I want to get into the 1176 world a bit more.įor the most authentic effect, the tradeoff in many instances appears to be latency, with some praising the technology of Nebula, but it is a much higher latency system than an algo-based solution. My first, immediate love in terms of the compressor emulations was the VariMU style, and some of the slower stuff in the Optical category. I can say that McDSP has quality stuff, but I haven't tried the stand alone 1176 (I have one of the channel strip bundles, so I know one of his 1176 compressors in that which is a paired down version). Then again, each compressor type takes some getting used to, to understand its best uses. There are also some very expensive products out there - like the Slate, which I would probably try if I could. Analog Obsession, which can be had for a one time single payment of something like $5, can be very worthwhile. The free company Anteres makes surprisingly good stuff. No-I haven't owned them all, and definitely haven't put them against one another. It has 4:1, 12:1 and 100:1 ratio modes as well.Ģ4) Antress Modern DynaKiller (free) (inspired by the 1176 but unique, with its own sound)Ĭlick to expand.I was just about to add Tim Petherick's 1176 (Nebula-based one) to the list.ġ176 is one that I haven't made up my mind on.
